The "Hanagasa" is styled as a flower with a bamboo design top and comes in a pale green verdigris colour. It has slotted sides and a cast iron wind-bell with domed roof.

In Japan and the Far East, wind-bells are hung outside under the eves; the gentle sounds are thought to cool the oppressive heat. According to Feng-Shui principles, when hung inside the home the latern may have beneficial effects.
