The "Zeni-gata" water basin is shaped into a "zeni" or "antique coin" with a square centre cut out to form the basin. Surrounding the basin are carved Kanji letters, "I only learn to be content" by lord Tokugawa (mid 1600s).
An original example of this style can be found in the famous Ryoanji temple in Kyoto and many copies can be found in tea gardens throughout Japan.
